About Heather

I’ve always been a free spirit and very curious about life. I spent my youth as a ballet dancer, studying at Boston Ballet. Though ballet is a discipline I’ve returned to again and again, that love has always been balanced with a desire to be outdoors in nature—hiking, skiing and more recently, practicing tai chi chuan.

I received my bachelor’s degree in dance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and I was the owner of Creative Edge Dance Studio in Bethlehem, New Hampshire for nearly 20 years. I sold the studio in 2008 and went on to earn my master’s degree in nutrition from Bridgeport University in Connecticut.

My Healing Journey to Tai Chi Chuan

I discovered tai chi chuan in 2010, when I herniated a disc in my back (I was dancing, all it took was a high kick and slight twist). Back surgery was recommended, but I was determined to avoid that route. Instead I chose natural healing methods‚ cranial osteopathy and tai chi chuan from the Tung family lineage. Together, they gave me what I needed to heal and thrive.

My tai chi practice has helped me heal more than just my back. Tai chi has been slowly undoing a lifetime of self-restricting thoughts. When I practice, my body gains a quiet strength. My mind calms, my spirit awakens. It would be my privilege to share that with you.

When not practicing tai chi at Winslow Park, my husband Jeff and I love to play on our waveskis in the summer, cross country ski in the winter, and camp in our camper van—affectionately named Martini—as often as possible.

The Tung Family Lineage

There are many styles, or lineages, of tai chi chuan. The Tung family lineage is a four-generation tai chi practice that has been taught since 1898. The founder of the lineage, Tung Ying Chieh, studied for many years with esteemed early masters, Li Hsiang Yuan and Yang Ch’eng-fu. The latter is credited with developing and refining Yang style tai chi, the predominant form practiced today.

The lineage passed from Tung Ying Chieh to his son, Great Master Tung Hu Ling, to his son Grand Master Tung Kai Ying, who taught his son, Master Tung Chen Wei, who currently teaches around the world. Master Tung Chen Wei has four young sons, all of whom are studying Tai Chi.

Heather and Jeff have studied extensively with students of Grand Master Tung Kai Ying and his son Master Tung Chen Wei as well as Grand Master and his son.
